Vacancy for a Passenger Services Director

Aim of Role 

To manage the Passenger Services Department and its volunteer resources in order to be able to support the service that the Railway offers and to provide support to the Board of Directors and Trustees.

Note:  The Passenger Services Department covers customer facing non-operational people such as train stewards, ticket inspectors, shop staff, Booking Office clerks, catering staff etc.

Time commitment 

Typically about 20-25 hours per week, exact hours are flexible, see location.

Location 

Some home based but attendance at Board and Management meetings and a presence at Chinnor and on the trains on principle operation days.

Main tasks

  • To produce and maintain of a list of current Passenger Services Department volunteers together with a list of their capabilities and qualifications.
  • To ensure that a roster is distributed in a timely manner for each operating day for a given period covering all duties required.
  • To find volunteers should there be a shortfall on any operating day. Tact, diplomacy and good interpersonal skills and a pleasant telephone manner are essential.
  • To arrange mentoring, training and assessment of new volunteers or for others who wish to widen their skills (or to arrange for other suitably qualified people to do this).
  • To represent the Passenger Services Department at Management and Board meetings, normally once a month on Tuesday evenings.
  • To help with strategic planning for the Passenger Services Department in response to the evolution of the railway's activities.
  • To promote efficient use of resources.
Skills/Experience

  • Proven experience management and particularly within the attractions and/or hospitality industry.
  • Good interpersonal skills for face to face meetings and on the telephone.
  • Home access to electronic (internet) communications.
  • Experience with using Microsoft Office especially Excel spreadsheets.
  • Proficiency with web based systems.
  • Ability to work as a team player and a team leader.
  • Good communication skills both written and verbal.

Additional Information

An interest in heritage railways would be an asset but is by no means essential.
