For a lucky few - only on Saturday 10 July at 10.30 and 11.50 (sorry, all other slots sold) - we are delighted to be able to give you the opportunity to take the controls of some classic traction – the Class 37 ‘Tractor’!
You'll enjoy the opportunity and get a feel of the locomotive's sheer power as you unleash its engine to tackle our steeply graded Railway, and YOU will drive a round trip of the line up to our boundary gate under guidance from our experienced driving instructor.
After driving the locomotive to our boundary gate, our driver will take the locomotive into Princes Risborough in order to run round thus giving you a unique footplate view of the Chiltern Mainline and the magnificent Princes Risborough North Signal Box.
Upon returning to our boundary gate at Thame Junction, YOU will once again take up the reins for the uphill run back to Chinnor to unleash the power of the ‘Tractor’.
It's always fun to join in with the fun on a Driving Experience - even for those who are not driving! We are pleased to welcome guests of YOU the driver and we can accommodate up to 6 additional people (accommodated in family groups / bubbles), if arranged in advance. Of course, these additional guests are welcome to travel for free on YOUR train!
Your Driving Experience Course price includes refreshments for the Driver and one guest. We will be delighted to provide additional refreshments for further guests, at our regular prices.
Our friendly crew will, before you board, sanitise all the controls and cab hand rails to ensure maximum cleanliness. Our crews will either be wearing a face shield or a face mask too whilst separating in the cab. We will also provide hand sanitiser in the cab and will also provide you with a face mask.
You will be able to bring along anyone who is in your ‘bubble’ for a ride whilst you are at the helm of this English Electric legend.

Our friendly and knowledgeable train crew will look after all our new Drivers and guide them throughout their Driving Experience Course. Starting with a Safety Briefing, we then give a familiarisation session with our locomotive, to show how it works and how to operate its controls. We'll show our new Drivers how to start and stop the locomotive and train safely and what to do as they take it and the train along 3 miles of our 3½ mile line.
We want all of our visitors to have a wonderful and memorable visit with us. If you have a special request for your Driving Experience Course, let us know and we’ll see if we can accommodate your wishes.
