UPDATE ON PRINCES RISBOROUGH NORTH SIGNAL BOX OPEN DAYS
It won’t come as a surprise to anyone that our first two public openings this year on 25th April and 4th July are cancelled due to the government restrictions relating to Coronavirus. As it’s unclear what the government guidelines are likely to be then we will put on hold the decision to open or not for the time being. We anticipate a final decision to be made a week or possible 10 days before the event. PLEASE DO NOT VISIT THE SIGNAL BOX OR PURCHASE ADVANCE TRAIN TICKETS TO GET THERE UNLESS YOU HEAR FROM THIS PAGE THAT WE ARE OPEN. THANK YOU.
- Open 10 Oct between 10.00 and 16.00 hours
- View the trains from a signalman’s perspective
- See the restoration taken place so far, the work still to do and the future for the signal box and the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway
- Learn about mechanical signalling methods
The traditional railway signal box, once immortalised by Charles Dickens, is fast disappearing from the UK’s railways. Princes Risborough North 'box once controlled railways radiating to every point of the compass and today, it is the largest former Great Western Railway signal box still standing; but as many readers will know, it was out of use and had deteriorated dramatically over the last 25 years. But the previous neglect is being rectified by C&PRR volunteers, which has already included the renewal of 200 panes of smashed glass, the building of a replica staircase and, fittingly, the casting of replica nameplates.
Access is via the restored Platform 4 at Princes Risborough railway station. On arrival at the main entrance cross over the footbridge to Platform 3 then follow the signs/instructions onto Platform 4. Children must always be accompanied by an Adult. There is a rough footpath to the signal box from Platform 4 and a steep staircase - so robust footwear is strongly advised. Numbers may have to be limited at times for safety reasons. Please keep away from the edge of all platforms, as high speed trains pass through some of them. Admission is free but donations are welcome.
Please note there is NO train service between Chinnor and Princes Risborough on 10 Oct.
